Attending USCSA Nationals in Lake Placid

Lake Placid has been a historic town in the snow sports community for the better part of a century. Our city first hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and again in 1980, so when it comes to putting on a big event, we know what we’re doing. Soon, hundreds of college athletes from across the country will flock to New York for one of the most exciting Lake Placid events yet: the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Nationals from March 10th through 14th. As one of the best hotels near Whiteface Mountain, Hotel North Woods compiled this guide of everything you need to know about attending the exhibitions and races.

Snowboarding and Skiing in Upstate New York

The USCSA Nationals will feature many sports beyond skiing in Upstate New York. Their alpine races include both skiers and snowboarders, and they’ll also hold some of the most competitive cross country ski races in New York. Despite their differences, all the athletes share two common goals: style and speed. The official list of USCSA disciplines is quite extensive, but here are a few that will be included in the Lake Placid events:

  • Slalom and giant slalom alpine skiing
  • Snowboardcross and slopestyle, which became an Olympic sport in 2014
  • Nordic team sprint and 15-kilometer mass start

You can view the full schedule of events here and past USCUA results for these events, as well as participating schools, on the association’s website. The festivities run for a full week in a different city each spring, and Lake Placid was fortunate to be selected for the first competition of a new decade. Luckily, Hotel North Woods is one of the best and most convenient hotels near Whiteface Mountain. You can stay near the action while enjoying proximity to everything our town has to offer.

Lodging and Entertainment During the USCSA Nationals

If you’re traveling all the way here to watch people ski, you deserve to get in on the fun. Before, after, or between the thrilling Lake Placid events, hit the slopes for your own take on skiing in Upstate New York. USCSA Nationals event volunteers typically receive a free lift ticket as thanks for their help. Even if you’re not a volunteer, Whiteface Mountain’s ticket prices are a great value.

Start with a scenic ride on the Cloudsplitter Gondola before trying your hand at amateur alpine or cross country ski races in New York.
