Train Hard, Play Hard: Ironman 70.3 comes to Lake Placid

This year, for the first time, Lake Placid welcomes the Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid. An iconic triathlon, this half Ironman will test your limits and strength with swimming, biking, and running to find out who is the fittest athlete to roam the Adirondack Mountains on September 10th, 2017. Lake Placid is a gorgeous and family-friendly town that has hosted two Olympic Games, so we know how to deliver world-class athletic events. If you’re a competitive triathlete or even just a casual one, this race should be on your bucket list.

Competitors in the first Ironman competition – 1978

During an award banquet for the Waikiki Swim Club, a Naval Officer and his fellow athletes began accessing which athletes were the fittest: swimmers, bikers, or runners. They eventually decided to combine three of the toughest endurance races on the island. On February 18, 1978, on the shores of Waikiki, 15 competitors took on the first-ever Ironman challenge. At this year’s Ironman 70.3 Lake Placid, athletes will follow a course that consists of single loops for each of the diciplines of the full-distance race. The competitors will begin with a one-loop swim in Mirror Lake and then transition through the Olympic Speed Skating Oval to bike the 56-mile ride. Finally, athletes will begin their 13.1 mile run through town and around the lake. This race will offer thirty-five slots to the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. So bring your best game face and become the next Ironman with a ticket to South Africa.

Whether you are coming to cheer on your athlete or take part in the race yourself, Lake Placid offers the perfect Ironman family vacation. Enjoy the amenities of a large city and the convenience of a small town. Enjoy restaurants, shopping, and world-class accommodations. Experience the town’s history, approachable charm and an abundance of personality. Check out the Olympic sites as you cheer on your athlete. Parts of the race will take part in Olympic sites, so as you wait for them to move onto the next section of the race or are waiting for them to cross the finish line you can take a tour of the venues.
