Whiteface set to open mountain for Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Snowmaking on the mountain set to begin mid-November
LAKE PLACID, NY. Whiteface Mountain is tentatively scheduled to open on Friday, November 27th. Snowmaking will commence in mid-November. Whiteface plans to have 60 runs ready for opening day.
Snowmaking isn’t the only thing happening at the mountain this time of year. Last weekend, the mountain’s ski patrol participated in their annual training which covered lift evacuations, mountain operations, a CPR refresher and medical skill evaluations.
The training time also allowed for a little recognition as the Whiteface Mountain Ski Patrol received the prestigious award for Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol, Eastern Division (which consists of 15 regions covering 183 different patrols from the entire northeast). They also received a Unit Citation in recognition and acknowledgement for being selected as the Eastern Division 2008-09 National Outstanding Large Alpine Patrol from the National Ski Patrol.
Whiteface staff are very excited about the upcoming ski and snowboard season. This years marketing message from Whiteface is “THINK VERTICAL”, which stresses Whiteface’s vertical drop of 3,430 feet, which the mountain boasts as the greatest vertical drop in the east. Last year Whiteface opened their third peak, Lookout Mountain, which includes a spectacular two and half mile intermediate trail. This year the terrain on Lookout Mountain has been expanded with the inclusion of 30 acres of new glade skiing.
Whiteface, with 98% snowmaking capability, offers 85 trails and 11 lifts, including an eight passenger gondola. More information about the mountain can be found at www.whiteface.com.
